Special Needs & ADHD Tutoring in Fremont, Newark & Union City
Burke Tutoring provides private special needs tutoring in Fremont, Newark, and Union City, California. We work one-to-one with K–12 students who have ADHD, autism, IEPs, 504 plans, and other neurodivergent learning profiles, either at the student's home or, when appropriate, at a local public library.
Burke Tutoring works with students who have ADHD, autism, neurodivergent learning profiles, IEPs, and 504 plans. When a student has an existing IEP or 504 plan, families are welcome to share relevant accommodations, learning strategies, and academic goals with us. We can consider that information when tailoring the pace, structure, explanations, and learning environment of the student's one-to-one academic tutoring sessions.
Burke Tutoring provides academic tutoring only. We do not provide ABA therapy, behavioral therapy, behavioral modification, behavioral treatment, clinical treatment, psychological services, diagnostic assessments, or other behavioral-health services. We also do not develop, administer, or provide services under an IEP.
A private tutor can adjust the lesson to the student
Students do not all learn at the same pace or respond to the same teaching approach. One-to-one tutoring gives the tutor room to change explanations, revisit prerequisite material, slow down when necessary, and focus on the student's most immediate academic needs.
One-to-One Attention
The tutor works with one student instead of dividing attention among several students in a classroom or group tutoring setting.
Flexible Pacing
Difficult concepts can receive additional time while material the student already understands can move more quickly.
Familiar Environment
In-home tutoring allows many students to work in a familiar, quieter environment without adding another after-school commute.
Academic tutoring that can adapt when attention is inconsistent
Burke Tutoring regularly works with students who have ADHD. Our role is not to treat ADHD. Our role is to help the student participate effectively in an academic lesson and better understand the material they are learning at school.
Depending on the student, a tutoring session may involve breaking a longer assignment into smaller academic steps, changing activities when attention begins to drift, using shorter explanations, checking understanding more frequently, or allowing a brief pause before returning to the work.
The academic goal remains the same: help the student understand the subject, strengthen missing skills, prepare for assignments and assessments, and become more capable of working through school material.
During an academic session we can:
One-to-one academic support for students who may learn differently
Neurodivergent students are not one group with one learning style. What works well for one student may be ineffective for another. We therefore start with the student's academic needs and adjust tutoring around the approaches that help that particular student engage with the material.
Students with ADHD
Sessions can use smaller academic steps, frequent understanding checks, flexible pacing, and a quieter one-to-one environment.
Students with Autism
We have provided academic tutoring to students with autism, including students whose families described their support needs as relatively mild. Tutoring remains focused on school subjects and academic work rather than behavioral treatment.
Students with IEPs or 504 Plans
We regularly work with students who have existing IEPs or 504 plans. Families can share relevant accommodations, academic goals, and learning strategies that are already working for the student.
We can use that information to tailor academic tutoring — for example, by adjusting pacing, breaking assignments into smaller steps, providing additional processing time, changing how concepts are explained, or structuring the lesson around approaches that help the student learn effectively.
Students Who Simply Need a Different Approach
A diagnosis is not required. Some students simply do better when someone can slow down, explain a concept another way, reduce distractions, and work beside them one-to-one.
Academic tutoring can complement a student's existing support team
Some of the students we tutor also receive services from ABA therapists, special education professionals, or other providers. With the family's permission, we can take relevant information from those professionals into account when it helps us structure the student's academic tutoring more effectively.
For example, we have worked with families of students with moderate autism where an existing ABA therapist helped us understand communication preferences, routines, or approaches that made it easier for the student to participate in a one-to-one academic lesson.
Burke Tutoring does not provide ABA therapy, behavioral therapy, behavioral modification, or behavioral treatment. Our role remains academic: helping the student understand school subjects, complete academic work, prepare for assessments, and build academic skills.
The student's ABA therapist or other professional remains responsible for behavioral or clinical services. Burke Tutoring remains responsible for the student's academic lesson.

SDP funding may support approved one-to-one academic tutoring
Burke Tutoring works with families participating in California's Self-Determination Program and with Financial Management Service providers including Accura FMS and ACE FMS.
When academic tutoring is an eligible service included in the participant's approved plan and spending structure, the family's FMS may be able to process payment for authorized tutoring services.
One-to-One Classes at Home
A Burke tutor can work individually with the student in the familiar environment of the family's home in Fremont, Newark, or Union City. This can be particularly useful for students who benefit from reduced distractions and individualized pacing.
One-to-One Classes at a Local Library
When the home is not the best learning environment, tutoring may also take place at an appropriate local library, giving the student a dedicated academic setting while preserving one-to-one instruction.
Burke Tutoring Works With Accura FMS & ACE FMS
If your family already participates in the Self-Determination Program and uses one of these Financial Management Services, contact us to discuss your student's academic needs and the steps required to establish approved tutoring services.

Your family and appropriate SDP team members can confirm whether academic tutoring is included as an eligible and approved service within the participant's plan and spending structure.
Begin One-to-One Tutoring
After the appropriate authorization and FMS requirements are completed, tutoring can be scheduled at home or at an appropriate local library.
Burke Tutoring does not determine Self-Determination Program eligibility, approve Individual Program Plans, approve spending plans, or guarantee Regional Center or SDP funding. Eligibility and authorization depend on the individual participant's approved plan, budget, spending plan, applicable program requirements, and FMS procedures.
Special Needs & ADHD Tutoring Across the Tri-City Area
Burke Tutoring serves families throughout Fremont, Newark, and Union City with private academic tutoring at the student's home or, when appropriate, at a nearby public library. Each city sits in a different school district, so the coursework, grading calendars, and accommodation paperwork we see differ from one to the next.
Families sometimes use the phrase special needs tutor when searching for supplemental academic support. Burke Tutoring works with students who have a range of learning needs, while our actual service remains academic tutoring rather than special education, behavioral therapy, or clinical treatment.
Special Needs & ADHD Tutoring in Fremont
Fremont students attend schools in Fremont Unified School District, the largest of the three Tri-City districts, with five comprehensive high schools including Mission San Jose, Irvington, American, Washington, and Kennedy. Most of the ADHD tutoring in Fremont we do is with middle and high school students carrying four to six academic classes at once, where the difficulty is usually keeping track of what is due rather than the subject matter itself.
We travel to homes across Mission San Jose, Warm Springs, Ardenwood, Irvington, Niles, and Centerville. When a family prefers a neutral setting, sessions can be held at the Fremont Main Library on Stevenson Boulevard.

In-Home Tutoring in Fremont →Special Needs & ADHD Tutoring in Newark, CA
Newark is served by Newark Unified School District, a smaller district feeding into Newark Junior High School and Newark Memorial High School. Because the district is compact, students often move through the same cohort for years, and families tell us they want an outside tutor precisely so the academic support stays separate from school.
We provide private ADHD tutoring in Newark, CA and academic support for students with autism, existing IEPs, and 504 plans, at home or at the Newark branch of the Alameda County Library on Cedar Boulevard. Sessions stay focused on coursework, assignments, and test preparation.

In-Home Tutoring in Newark →Special Needs & ADHD Tutoring in Union City, CA
Union City students attend New Haven Unified School District, which runs Alvarado, Cesar Chavez, and Itliong-Vera Cruz middle schools and James Logan High School. James Logan is one of the largest high schools in Alameda County, and for a student who needs frequent checks for understanding, that class size is often the reason a family looks for one-to-one tutoring in Union City in the first place.
We tutor at homes throughout Union City, from the Decoto and Alvarado areas to the neighborhoods near Union Landing, and at the Union City branch of the Alameda County Library. Tutoring is adjusted around the student's pace, current assignments, upcoming assessments, and any accommodations already in place at school.

In-Home Tutoring in Union City →Burke Tutoring works with Accura FMS and ACE FMS. Eligible Self-Determination Program participants may be able to use approved funding for qualifying one-to-one academic tutoring at home or at an appropriate local library when the service is authorized within the participant's plan. Families in Alameda County are served by Regional Center of the East Bay, which administers the program locally. Burke Tutoring does not determine eligibility, approve plans, or guarantee funding.
Private in-home tutoring can give families their evenings back
Academic support is only one part of the tutoring decision. Families also have to consider the time required to get a student to and from a learning center every week.
With private in-home tutoring, the tutor handles the commute. Your student can begin the lesson at home while a parent continues working, prepares dinner, helps another child, or takes care of other responsibilities.
That difference can be especially valuable for families scheduling tutoring multiple times each week, and for students who already have full school, therapy, extracurricular, or family schedules.
A 60-minute lesson can require much more than 60 minutes
If a parent drops the student off and returns later, the family may make the trip twice.
The tutor travels to you
Your student receives one-to-one academic help while the rest of the family can continue its evening at home.
A learning center that is only 15 minutes from home adds about 30 minutes of round-trip driving to each appointment. At two tutoring sessions per week, that is about one additional hour of family driving every week before accounting for parking, waiting, traffic, or making another round trip for pickup.
Actual travel time varies by neighborhood and schedule, but for many Fremont, Newark, and Union City families, having the tutor come to the student can remove a significant recurring time commitment.
A quieter one-to-one setting can remove:
For some students, the environment matters as much as the explanation
A student may understand a subject but struggle to make good use of a crowded or highly stimulating learning environment.
In-home tutoring creates a different setting. School materials are already nearby, the tutor can see each step the student takes, and the entire lesson can remain focused on one student's questions.
This is not automatically better for every neurodivergent student. Some students focus better outside the home. When that is the case, meeting at an appropriate local library may provide a useful alternative while preserving one-to-one instruction.
