Leading coefficient

Decides whether trinomials come out as x² + bx + c, as ax² + bx + c, or as a blend. It also sets the leading coefficient on difference of squares and perfect squares.

Factor number size

Sets the numbers used inside the factors. Multiplying them out can give larger coefficients, so (x + 11)(x + 12) prints as x² + 23x + 132.

A factoring worksheet you set up yourself

A fixed page of problems rarely lines up with the lesson you taught that morning. Here you set the structure first: which factoring patterns show up, how big the numbers get, and how much room students have to work. The answer key prints on its own page.

Problems are generated the moment you click, so a new set comes out every time. When you need a second sheet for a makeup quiz or for someone who missed class, click Create Version B and you get a fresh set built from the same settings.

What you can set

Problem type

Pick any mix of trinomials, GCF first problems, difference of squares, and perfect square trinomials. Check a single box to drill one method. Check several and students have to work out which method applies before they can factor anything.

Whether a trinomial arrives as x² + bx + c or as ax² + bx + c is set by the Leading coefficient control rather than by a second checkbox, so the two settings cannot contradict each other.

Leading coefficient, signs and roots

Hold the leading coefficient at a = 1 while students learn the basic pattern, then open it up to a > 1 when you introduce the AC method. The setting reaches every problem type on the sheet. Restrict signs to all positive for a first pass, or force negatives in so students stop assuming both binomials add. Set roots to positive, negative, mixed or repeated when you want to target one misconception at a time.

Integer factorization

With the guarantee box checked, every expression on the sheet factors over the integers. A student who gets stuck then knows the issue is their method rather than the question.

Prime problems, on purpose

Uncheck the guarantee and set a percentage when you want students to tell factorable quadratic expressions apart from ones that do not factor over the integers. Each prime problem is built so that its discriminant is not a perfect square and its three terms share no common factor, which makes prime the correct answer rather than an accident.

Two versions of the same worksheet

Create Version B builds a second worksheet from the same settings with different numbers. Same difficulty, same skills, different answers. Keep going for versions C and D if you need them.

How to create a factoring worksheet

  • Pick a difficulty level, or switch to Custom and set the options yourself.
  • Check the problem types you want on the page.
  • Choose how many problems and how much work space each one gets.
  • Click Download PDF for a file you can print, or Download Word to edit the wording, change the header, or drop in a bonus question.

The answer key sits on its own page, so you can hand out the worksheet on its own or keep both together for whoever covers your class.

Every item on the sheet is an expression to factor, such as x² − 5x − 24, rather than an equation to solve. If you are moving on to factorable quadratic equations, have students set each factored form equal to zero and read off the roots.

The five difficulty levels

  • Level 1: x² + 7x + 12. Leading coefficient 1, every term positive.
  • Level 2: x² − x − 12. Leading coefficient 1, negatives allowed.
  • Level 3: 2x² + 7x + 3. Small leading coefficients, introduces the AC method.
  • Level 4: 6x² − x − 2. Larger leading coefficients, negative terms included.
  • Level 5: mixed practice covering GCF, difference of squares, perfect squares, and a share of prime problems.

Questions

Is this factoring quadratics worksheet generator free?

Yes. There is no account and no email to hand over. The only branding is one line of small grey text in the footer, and you can clear that field before you download.

Can I download the worksheet as a PDF with answers?

Yes. Download PDF gives you a factoring quadratics PDF with the worksheet on page one and the answer key on page two. Uncheck “Include answer key in downloads” if you would rather keep the key to yourself, or use Print Answer Key to print it on its own.

Can I edit the worksheet after downloading?

Download the Word version. It opens as an editable document in Word and in most other word processors, so you can reword the instructions, add a header, or take problems out.

Do all the problems factor?

With “Guarantee every problem factors over the integers” checked, yes. Uncheck it and set a prime percentage when you want students to practice spotting quadratics that do not factor.

Does it handle factoring trinomials where a is greater than 1?

Yes. Check Trinomials, then set the leading coefficient to a > 1 or Mixed. Those problems are built from two binomials with integer coefficients, and the three terms are checked to confirm they share no common factor, so they call for the AC method rather than a GCF.

Can I make two different versions of the same worksheet?

Click Create Version B. It builds a new problem set from the same settings with different numbers, labeled Version B on the page. Add versions C and D the same way.
