Tutoring FAQs: Rates, Assessments & Classes
Answers to common questions about in-home tutoring in Fremont, Newark, and Union City, online one-on-one tutoring, and AP group classes.
Getting started
What subjects and grade levels do you tutor?
We tutor K–12 math, English, writing, and science, including algebra, geometry, precalculus, calculus, biology, chemistry, and physics. Our AP and competition offerings include AP Calculus AB and BC, AP Physics 1, AP Chemistry, AP Biology, AP Literature, AMC, Math Kangaroo, and Math Olympiad.
Contact us with your student’s course and grade level to check availability.
Where do tutoring sessions take place?
Our tutors travel to students’ homes in Fremont, Newark, and Union City. We can also arrange sessions at local libraries or coffee shops within our service area. Online one-on-one tutoring is available as well.
Is the initial consultation free?
Yes. Call or text (510) 453-0350 to discuss your student’s grade, subject, goals, and availability. That conversation is free.
For one-on-one tutoring, the assessment that follows is a separate paid class. Online AP group classes do not require an assessment.
How much does the assessment cost, and what happens during it?
One-on-one tutoring starts with a paid assessment. A one-hour assessment costs $85 in-home or $50 online for one student. Two siblings can share an in-home assessment lasting at least 90 minutes for $125.
The tutor reviews your student’s needs and schoolwork, then uses the final 10–15 minutes to discuss findings and a proposed study plan with your family. Assessments are charged once per subject, per student. You meet the tutor before deciding whether to buy a private package.
No assessment is required for online AP group classes.
What if the first tutor is not the right fit?
For one-on-one tutoring, we offer a free second assessment with a different tutor so your family can compare and choose. If you already have a private package, its hours can also be used with another tutor on our team.
How does the free extra hour work?
When you purchase a private tutoring package after the assessment, we add one bonus hour at no additional charge. The assessment fee remains separate. If you decide not to purchase a package, you pay only for the assessment you completed.
How are your tutors screened?
Every tutor passes a background check, has at least three years of tutoring experience, and passes our in-house subject proficiency test. Founder Berke Sahbazoglu personally interviews tutors and reviews their written feedback to parents.
How will I know whether tutoring is helping?
After each one-on-one session, you receive written feedback about your student’s work. The assessment provides a starting point and study plan.
Review progress against the skills and schoolwork your student needs help with. We do not promise improvement after a fixed number of tutoring hours.
Rates and class options
How much does one-on-one tutoring cost?
Standard in-home tutoring costs $85 for a single hour, with package rates of $65–$75 per hour. AP and competition tutoring costs $100 for a single hour, with package rates of $75–$80 per hour.

Which packages are available, and do the hours expire?

Paid private-package hours never expire. Standard hours can move between standard subjects; AP hours can move between AP and competition subjects. Hours can also be used with more than one tutor.
Can two siblings share an in-home session?
Yes, for standard subjects. If the children study different subjects or grade levels, the second child pays half the applicable hourly rate. If both study the same subject at the same grade level, the second child adds $15 per hour.
These sibling rates apply to two children in standard in-home tutoring. They do not apply to AP subjects, competition math, or online classes. Contact us about arrangements for three or more children.
Do you offer online AP group classes?
Yes. Berke Sahbazoglu leads online groups for AP Biology, AP Chemistry, and AP Physics 1. Each class meets once a week for 90 minutes, following the Fremont Unified School District calendar.
No assessment is required to join an AP group. Contact us for current subject availability and meeting times.

Payment and scheduling
How do I pay? Are there additional fees?
We accept Zelle on every plan and bank ACH transfers for 30- and 50-hour private packages. We do not accept credit cards.
Private-package payment is due before the package’s first session. There are no registration or materials charges. Assessments are separate, and installment or early-termination fees may apply.
Can I pay for a package in installments?
A 50-hour private package can be split into two installments for a one-time $75 fee. This installment option is not offered for smaller private packages. The rates page lists the installment amounts.
What is your cancellation or sick policy?
For private tutoring, give 48 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule without using your booked hours. For illness, give 24 hours’ notice.
A private session missed without the required notice is not refunded or rescheduled. Online AP groups follow their separate school-calendar and billing terms.
What happens if I end a package or AP group plan early?
| Package | Standard | AP / competition |
|---|---|---|
| 4 hours | $50 | Not offered |
| 10 hours | $150 | $200 |
| 30 hours | $250 | $250 |
| 50 hours | $350 | $350 |
For private packages, we subtract completed hours at your package rate, deduct the termination fee from the remaining credit, and refund the balance. The fee cannot exceed that remaining credit.
Online AP group termination fees are $50 for the monthly plan or $150 for the qualifying prepaid plan. See Class Rates & Fees for the full terms.
