About Kimani

Kimani teaches reading and writing at every level — children just finding their footing with a paragraph, high schoolers trying to make an argument hold together, and students drafting the essay that goes on a college application.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in English with a focus on creative writing and a master’s in English Composition. He has taught at San Francisco State University, CSU East Bay, Santa Clara University, and Menlo College. Composition is specific training in how writing is actually taught and assessed, rather than simply being good at English, and it shows in how he marks up a draft.

Kimani works with the piece a student actually has to hand in. Feedback is line-level and concrete: what this sentence is doing, what it was probably meant to do, and how to close the gap.

How Kimani Runs a Session

Sessions start with the student’s assigned text or draft. Kimani reads it closely, marks it up with the student rather than for them, and works through revision as a process the student can repeat without him next time.

After every session you get a written note covering what was worked on and what to watch for in the next assignment. For younger readers, that note usually includes something specific you can do at home during the week.

Where Kimani Tutors

Kimani tutors in students’ homes across the Tri-City area: Fremont, Newark, and Union City. When home isn’t practical, he also meets students at local library branches and cafés.
